Workcover NSW release Online Safety Self-Assessment tool
WorkCover New South Wales has introduced an effective new online tool. This tool has been developed to give small and medium sized businesses an indication of how well they are handling their workplace health, safety and injury management and provide further guidance for improvement. EPA Releases Hazard Classification for Prescribed Industrial Waste
The Environment Protection Agency Victoria (EPA Vic) has released a brochure notifying generators of solid prescribed industrial waste of their obligations to classify their wastes by hazard category from 1 July 2007. The brochure also outlines ways by which waste can be classified into Category A, B or C as well as describing "the associated landfill levies and management options that apply". Read more:

NTC: Regulation inconsistencies identified in review

Workplace safety authorities of Australian and New Zealand meet in Perth to set priorities
Australian and New Zealand workplace safety authorities, meeting as the Heads of Workplace Safety Authorities (HWSA), met in Perth last week (March 8) to discuss current national campaigns and set priorities for the year ahead.

WorkSafe Victoria: Precast panel yards targeted
The safety of workers in precast panel yards and the manufacture of concrete panels will be the focus of a WorkSafe campaign that begins mid March and runs until the end of May.
We are putting the industry on notice, as unfortunately, regardless of the work which has been done, dangerous incidents continue to occur.

Timber mill gets $20,000 fine for injury
SafeWork SA this week warned that safety guards for old or little-used machines in workplaces are a must, as is proper training in the use of machines.
This comes after the SA Industrial Relations Court fined a Mt. Gambier timber firm $20,000 over a serious hand injury suffered by a worker two years ago.

National Moving Plant in Civil Construction Audit program
ACT WorkCover Inspectors have commenced inspections on commercial and civil constructions sites as part of the National campaign. They are measuring compliance with the ACT Occupational Health and Safety Act 1989 (the Act) in relation to mobile plant and traffic hazards.
This campaign is one in a series of National campaigns that have been endorsed by the Heads of Workplace Safety Authorities aimed at reducing injuries in the construction industry. Approximately 40 sites will be visited with the focus of the campaign being on the safety of persons working with or around mobile plant.

New National Certification Arrangements For Plant
New requirements are being introduced nationally, as a result of recent independent reviews of the current national certification arrangements (in place since the mid-1990s) for people performing high-risk work.
This concerns those applying for or intending to apply for a certificate of competency to operate a fork-lift truck, an order picking fork-lift truck, a crane, a hoist, a boom-type elevating work platform, a concrete placing boom or pressure equipment, or to undertake dogging, rigging or scaffolding tasks.
