From the Desk of OHS Centre

The Beaconsfield mine collapse in 2006 has been getting prime publicity since it occurred, and now throughout the inquest it still rates highly in the news; and so it should. We, in Australia, value life and become appalled at the loss of it through workplace incidents.

Moura, NSW, is another mining district familiar with disaster; and has endured a string of mining incidents which has cost the lives of many community members.

20 September is the 33rd anniversary of the 1975 Kianga Mine disaster when thirteen miners died from an explosion initiated by spontaneous combustion. The bodies were never recovered and the mine was sealed.

16 July was the 22nd anniversary of the 1986 Moura No 4 Mine disaster when twelve miners died from an explosion considered arising from either frictional ignition or a flame safety lamp. The bodies of these 12 community members where recovered.

7 August was the 14th anniversary of the 1994 Moura No 2 Mine disaster. In this tragedy the lives of eleven miners were lost, and again, the mine was sealed with the bodies inside. Re-entry was considered impossible and it may have cost more lives to retrieve them.

These miners are not statistics but were people working for the betterment of their lives and that of their families. They all expected to come home.

Underground mining is a considerably risky industry. However, the greater the risk, the higher and more stringent the control measures need to be. That is law. In each of the Moura cases, safety management was seen to be lax and day-to-day control measures, such as assessments, measurements, checks and balances, were not taken seriously enough. The Beaconsfield inquest has some interesting points to it, also.

This is one of the big concerns with safety management systems and people, regardless of the industry. When negative occurrences are rare in our workplace, it is a common failure to view periodic safety checks and assessments as a waste of valuable hours and money; which is a major oversight and displays a lack of understanding.

When criticality wanes in performing these checks and balances, they are either dropped off altogether or are relegated to low-importance and partly dropped off, thereby affecting their two principal instruments of effectiveness, namely consistency and thoroughness.

What needs to be clearly understood in every industry is that consistent and thorough periodic checks and assessments are a major component of risk management control measures, and if no disasters seem to occur in our workplaces it may be due to those very measures.

OHS Centre wishes to express its condolences to all who have lost a friend or loved one in a workplace incident.

Does your workplace Microwave Oven leak radiation?

Today, more than 90% of workplaces use a microwave oven. They are almost a necessity, but, do we know the potential hazards?

When a microwave oven is turned on, microwave radiation is present. Microwave radiation disappears once you turn the oven off, but until then, radiation can leak from the microwave oven.

Risk management
Microwave oven Radiation Testing is often undertaken as part of an organisation's Risk Management or Preventative Maintenance program to ensure the levels of radiation escaping from the unit are within recommended limits.

What can microwave radiation do to you?
"Exposure to sufficiently high levels of microwaves will cause heating. In the case of human tissue, excessive heating could have serious health effects such as deep tissue burns and hyperthermia. The purpose of Australian Standards is to avoid all known adverse health effects by limiting exposures to levels below those at which heating occurs." SO: Australian Radiation Protection an Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) Australian Commonwealth Government

Tests have shown it is possible for your workplace microwave to leak radiation up to 20 (x) times above the recommended limit.

What are the limits for microwave radiation leakage?
"The Standard specifies a test to assess the level of microwave leakage and states that 'The microwave leakage at any point 50 millimetres or more from the external surface of the appliance shall not exceed 50 watts per square metre'. This Standard applies to ovens designed for domestic applications, even if used in a workplace." SO: Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) Australian Commonwealth Government

How do I find out if our workplace microwave oven leaks?
The best way to accurately determine if your microwave ovens are within the guideline limits is to have them tested by a recognised specialist using a NATA laboratory calibrated equipment.
Small leakage detectors used by many electricians should not be used as they do not comply with Australian Standard guidelines.

Testing can be provided by Australia's only ISO 9001 Accredited Quality Endorsed specialist microwave radiation testing organisation, Microwave Safety Systems Pty Ltd , who service the Govt and corporate sector. Inspections can be arranged Australia-wide by calling 1300 305 303 or visiting www.microwavesafe.net
