DRUGS & ALCOHOL in the workplace

Having a drug free workplace is a challenge for most businesses, and those who do not go down this path sooner or later continue to expose themselves and their people to serious risks, and leave the business open to litigation issues.

In undertaking a Drug and Alcohol program, many organisations focus on education alone, whilst others are now supporting education with higher levels of controls, such as detection methods.  Some transport companies breathalyse dedicated drivers prior to every shift. However, alcohol is not the only concern, and the issue is much wider than the transport industry.  Every industry and every workplace has the potential to be affected.

With a marked increase in the quantity and variety of alcohol and social drugs available combined with late night (early morning) nightclubbing, detection of substances in workers prior to commencing work is a serious concern for all workplace supervisors.

Dismissing alcohol as a non-drug or minimal problem is a failure to appreciate its widespread usage and cause of incidents, as alcohol has been an accepted part of the modern working life for many years; and, although often easy to detect by smell, is a hazard that shouldn’t be allowed to enter the workplace.  Pills and other drugs can be more difficult to detect and create greater challenges in protecting the health and safety of workers.

A common, but challenging, characteristic in all effective drug free workplace programs is finding the balance between the rights of employees and the need for the organisation to know; therefore, developing and implementing a Drug and Alcohol program should be done in consultation with workers, begining with the organisation's philosophy and work from the top down.

Government and industry advice is freely available - www.ohscentre.com.au under Industry Links, and there are organisations listed in our national OHS&E directory that will be able to assist in creating your D&A program.  See www.ohscentre.com.au (under consultants and services).

How can drug and alcohol testing help my business save money?

As an employer it is your "duty of care" to provide a safe working environment for all employees, contractors and visitors. Implementation of structured drug and alcohol programs assist with this responsibility.

By reducing the risk of potential accidents in the workplace, your business can minimise the costs that are incurred such as ongoing medical costs, employment of temporary replacement staff,  WorkCover premiums and workers compensation liabilities.

What can Integrity Sampling™ offer my company?

Until recently, the most common method of drug testing in the workplace has been via blood or urine. Both these procedures are intrusive and can cause disruption within the workplace. As a result of this, many businesses have elected not to implement drug and alcohol testing as part of their Occupational Health & Safety program.

Fortunately, new technology is now available that can speed up the drug and alcohol testing process, resulting in minimal "down time" for employees. Saliva (also known as oral fluid) drug testing requires only a small sample of saliva to identify the recent use of drugs, avoiding the need for urine collection devices or needles. It is easy and non-intrusive and provides accurate results within minutes.

Integrity Sampling is a group of highly qualified technicians who provide a uniform, independent drug and alcohol testing service throughout Australia and New Zealand. They are all proficient in the use of the Cozart® drug detection systems and the Alcolizer breath analysis equipment, and are all required to comply with strict policies and procedures which have been developed in accordance with the highest requirements of Australian Standard AS4760 for oral fluid drug testing.

Integrity Sampling specialise in the development of workplace drug and alcohol policies, drug and alcohol awareness education programs, independent workplace drug and alcohol testing which extends to a 24 hour, 7 day a week call-out service. So call us for more information today on 1300 SALIVA (1300 725 482), or visit our website via OHS Centre’s national OHS&E directory.
