In recent years we have seen a rise in stress across all spheres of life, particularly in the workplace. Approximately 7.7 million Australians spend one-quarter to one-third of their waking lives at work so it is not surprising that we are seeing workplace stress emerging as a major cause of physical and mental health problems.

WorkSafe has called on Victorian employers and workers to maximise fall prevention safety after the deaths of two men in two days.
A 60-year-old Blackburn South man died in hospital on Wednesday after falling from racking at a Nunawading business on June 3.

This year sees VIOSH Australia at the University of Ballarat celebrating 30 years of education and research in the occupational health and safety field. Dangerous tractors without rollover protection are still to be found on Victorian farms a decade after a push to have them made a thing of the past.

5/6/08 VIC: Food For Thought Campaign
A CAMPAIGN targeting safe manual labour at food manufacturing plants will be conducted next month in a bid to crack down on unsafe work places.
WorkSafe Victoria will visit food manufacturers and processors from 1 July and issue improvement and prohibition notices where occupational health and safetyt issues are identified.

June 08 ACT: Increase in Inspector visits 08-09
The Attorney General, Mr Simon Corbell MLA, has advised that the ACT Government will be hiring
an additional three occupational health and safety Inspectors as part of the 2008-09 budget.
This funding is part of the Territory’s ongoing commitment to ensuring workplace safety is a priority
for businesses.

30.6.08 NSW: Forests NSW calls on public to observe safety signs
Forests NSW has issued a safety alert appealing to the public to observe forest safety signs associated with harvesting operations within its pine plantations and native forests.
"The safety of our visitors, employees and contractors is paramount to Forests NSW. In a working forest it is critical that all persons observe the requirements of our safety signs," Forests NSW log supply coordinator Tijmen Klootwijk said.

20/6/08 WA: Worker death at remote community results in $26,000 fine
An Aboriginal corporation has been fined $26,000 after the death of a worker in a mechanical workshop at a remote Aboriginal community.
Mindibungu Aboriginal Corporation pleaded guilty in the Kununurra Magistrates Court this week to failing to provide a safe working environment and, by that failure, causing the death of a worker.

An engineering team has been sent to CSR Sugar's Pioneer Mill in North Queensland to work on restoring crushing operations as soon as possible.
CSR Sugar Mills Group executive general manager, Mark Day, says it is too early to determine when full production would resume at the mill.

30/6/08 NT: New Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation legislation commences 1 July 2008
On the 1 July 2008, the new Workplace Health and Safety Act and the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act commence. These two Acts replace the Work Health Act. The new Workplace Health and Safety Act extends coverage of occupational health and safety onto mine sites and mining activities.

4/6/08 NAT: Transport accidents and suicide top causes of injury death among youth
Transport accidents and suicide are the two leading causes of injury death among young people, according to a report released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The report, Injury among young Australians, shows that injury as a whole was responsible for two-thirds of all deaths of young people aged 12 to 24 years in 2005, and for one in six hospitalisations.
