VIC: WORKSAFE BLITZ ON MANUAL HANDLING AT FOOD MANUFACTURERS
A state-wide campaign targeting manual handling safety begins on 1 July when food manufacturers and processors will be visited by WorkSafe Victoria inspectors.
Improvement and Prohibition Notices will be issued where safety issues are found.
Prosecutions will follow if serious breaches are identified. .

08 VIC: May 08 VIC: World First Plan to Help Workers Fight Chronic Disease
Victoria’s 2.6 million workers will have the chance to be screened for preventable diseases like diabetes, in a major world first initiative announced today by Premier John Brumby.
Mr Brumby, who has made tackling chronic disease one of his highest priorities, said the new initiative, WorkHealth, would be funded for five years under a $600 million fund to be set aside from WorkSafe’s surplus funds.

VIC: WorkSafe Victoria commits to Dial Before You Dig
Dial Before You Dig and WorkSafe Victoria have called on plant operators and tradesmen to reduce the risk of injury by checking on the presence of underground infrastructure before they begin work.
Dial Before You Dig is a free referral service used by professional contractors, underground asset owners (e.g. gas, water, electricity and data cabling) and individuals undertaking excavation.

VIC: Leg broken while working in pit
WorkSafe has warned against working in close proximity to mobile plant after a worker’s leg was broken at Narre Warren this morning.
WorkSafe’s investigation is at an early stage, but it is understood the Mulgrave man was carrying out maintenance work at the bottom of a three-metre deep pit when he was struck by the bucket of an excavator.
The pit was part of stormwater management infrastructure.

WA: Lobster processing company fined $60,000 over worker death
A Geraldton lobster processing company has been fined $60,000 for failing to provide a work environment free from hazards after an employee died as a result of a workplace fall in 2005.
Geraldton Fisherman’s Co-operative Ltd pleaded guilty earlier this month to failing to provide a safe working environment and, by that failure, causing the death of an employee and was fined in the Geraldton Magistrates Court today.

WA: Labour Hire company fined $27,500
A labour hire company has been fined $27,500 for failing to ensure that a workplace was safe before allowing its workers to attend that workplace after a labour hire worker’s fingers were crushed in an unguarded machine.
Skilled Group Limited pleaded guilty to failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace, and by that failure, causing serious harm to a worker, and was fined in the Fremantle Magistrates Court last week.

WA: $35,000 fine after WorkSafe successfully appeals dismissal
WorkSafe has been successful in appealing against the dismissal of a court case against a builder with control over a tilt-up construction site where a worker was killed in 2002, and the builder involved has been fined $35,000.
Construction worker Desmond Kelsh died in September 2002 on a building site at Myaree when tilt-up panels collapsed, crushing him.

Qld: HACS Industry Leading Teams: Working Well
Psychological injury has been identified as a key issue for Health and Community Services (HACS) sector workplaces.
In response to the recommendations arising from the 2002 Workplace Safety Summit, WorkCover NSW commissioned research into Work Related Stress: Causes, Impact and Solutions in 2004. The overall aim of this study was to provide WorkCover with contemporary, evidence-based options for the effective prevention and management of psychological injuries. The findings from this study proposed an organisational or systems approach as key to reducing the negative impact of stress.

Qld: Wiring rules seminars a hot ticket. More seminars to come…
Record attendances at the Wiring Rules seminars being held around the state have resulted in extra seminars being scheduled to cope with the demand.
More than 2,500 people attended 23 seminars in 10 locations over the two months from 30 January to end of March this year.

Preventing Psychological Injury: A report for Comcare on the pilot prevention project by Dr Peter Cotton is now available to order at a cost of $20 (inc. GST). NAT: Initiative met with healthy appetite
The Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC) has received an overwhelming response to its health initiative.
Launched in February this year, the initiative targets two major health concerns in the building and construction industry: mental health and sun safety.
Items available to accredited companies include sun safe posters and a 1-litre pump pack of SPF 30+ sunscreen for use on work sites. .
