Person dead after explosion causes fire at Mackay industrial shed

A PERSON is dead after a fire broke out in an industrial shed in Mackay, about 900km north of Brisbane.

A man was killed in an explosion at an aluminium fabrication business in Mackay, in north Queensland.

Emergency services were flooded with 000 calls after an explosion in the vicinity of Len Shield St, Paget, at 2.38pm.

One man was found deceased when emergency services arrived, but they were unable to confirm any further details.

One witness said she heard a big bang. "It gave us a hell of a fright,’’ she said.

"The (business’s) signs only just went up in the last couple of weeks, but that shed’s been there for a long time.’’

A police spokesperson said the man had been working on a boat with a group of men when the explosion occurred, but no one else was injured.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) said it appeared they were welding the fuel tank of a boat before the explosion.

QFRS area director Steve DePinto said the explosion "ripped through the roof of the building and there was debris over a fairly large area’’.

"It was quite a violent explosion and there was a subsequent fire that had to be extinguished in the aluminium boat.’’

The industrial building was substantially damaged in the explosion.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the death of a man in the Mackay explosion.

The explosion is being treated as non-suspicious and is being investigated by Workplace Health and Safety authorities.
