The Department of Mines and Petroleum’s (DMP) Resources Safety Division has commenced a recruitment drive for additional inspectors.
The new positions will assist the Resources Safety Division to expand and improve delivery of safety regulatory services across the State’s growing resource sectors.
Positions will be available for safety professionals in the safety regulatory areas, particularly in mines safety. As part of phase one of the recruitment process key positions in Kalgoorlie, Collie and Perth will be advertised with a total of 14 positions for a variety of mining inspectors.
Phases two and three will see an additional 49 positions advertised.
Advertising for phase one will commence on 28 August, with phase two from late September and the final phase at the end of October.
The positions will be advertised locally and nationally in a range of diverse media. If positions are unable to be filled through these processes an overseas campaign will be conducted.
As part of Attraction and Retention initiatives new salary packages comparable to those being paid by the resources industry have been developed to attract and retain employees with the necessary skills and experience.
The additional positions signal the State Government’s commitment to become a best practice safety regulator and to secure the safety and health of people working in Western Australia’s rapidly growing resources sector.
The approach to safety management will be an evidence and risk-based ‘best practice’ standard, focusing on reducing the likelihood of a serious incident in all aspects of resource industry activities.
The expanded service will require a significant increase in technical staff over the next two to three years and the department will be seeking to recruit people with expertise in:
• Mining engineering and mining operations; • Petroleum engineering and petroleum operations; • Occupational Health and Safety; • Chemical and process engineering.
Increased capacity will be complemented by the introduction of assessed competencies requirements, training and development of staff.

The Resources Safety Division (RSD) role is to administer the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004 to ensure the safe use of dangerous goods, manage the State’s explosives reserves and secure the safety and health of people working in Western Australia’s resources sector.
It also regulates safety for the petroleum (oil and gas) sector under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967 and the Petroleum Pipelines Act 1969.
