A man in his 50s is dead after being crushed by a water tank at a business in West Melbourne.

The man suffered serious head and chest injuries in the incident on Footscray Road.

Paramedics arrived at the scene but the man suffered a cardiac arrest and died a short time after.

A work colleague was taken to hospital for observation.
