A MAN has died after being crushed by his truck in a warehouse in Melbourne's north, in the third workplace death this week.
Police believe the man, aged in his 40s, had reached into the driver’s side of the truck to turn the ignition on. The vehicle jumped forward and pinned him against wall in International Drive, Tullamarine, at about 8.25pm last night.
Emergency services freed the man but he died at the scene.
A 73-year-old Yea farmer died on Monday after he was gored by a bull that turned on him as he was trying to move the animal.
On Thursday, a 45-year-old tree feller died in Lara after his cherry picker malfunctioned, throwing him 15m to the ground.
It is believed the machinery had been malfunctioning earlier in the day.
WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said the three workplaces deaths this week – totalling 19 for the year – happened during ordinary tasks.
"These three guys were all doing routine jobs but it’s those everyday tasks that they do all the time that kill people, more than those freak accidents do,’’ Mr Birt said.
"December through to January always sees a spike in workplace deaths and also in serious injuries because it’s the busiest time of year for most industries.
"Construction workers are rushing to get projects to lock-up stage before they break for Christmas and retail warehouse workers are flat out.
"It’s so important that workers don’t cut corners when they’re doing the jobs they do everyday, and speak up if there are safety issues at work.’’
