The Department of Mines and Petroleum’s State Mining Engineer Simon Ridge and Safety Reform Project Director Simon Skevington were guest presenters at Anglogold Ashanti’s annual Regional Safety Workshop held earlier this month.
The two day workshop was attended by AngloGold Ashanti’s general managers, managers, health and safety personnel, and key contractor representatives.
Mr Ridge and Mr Skevington delivered a combined presentation at the workshop, with Mr Skevington covering best practice, Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMPs) and risk based approach, while Mr Ridge discussed national harmonisation and the role of Inspectors.
Kalgoolie-based Mine Safety Inspectors Terry Siefken and Jock Watson also attended the workshop.
Mr Skevington said the workshop was well attended and their presentation well received.
“There were a number of questions raised by the audience, particularly surrounding the issue of PHMPs,” Mr Skevington said.
“It was a good opportunity for the department to speak face to face with the company and outline how these reforms will impact on safety in the industry.”
The department has been involved in a number of briefings with industry and industry groups in regards to recent State and Federal reforms.
“We encourage companies to contact the department if they would like further information regarding recent and upcoming reforms,” Mr Skevington said.
